Mkwesaqtuk / Cap-Rouge Campground

Walk-in cliff-side Parks Canada campground above the Gulf.

Opened in 2022 on a dramatic cliff above the Gulf of St. Lawrence, 16 km from Chéticamp. Mkwesaqtuk is a Mi'kmaq word for places that turn distinctly red — the same coast Acadians later named Cap-Rouge.

Sites & amenities

40 walk-in tent sites, 5 walk-in oTENTiks, and 2 tiny cabins (added 2025). Vault toilets, mobile-charging stations and Parks Canada gear carts. No vehicle access to sites.

Best for

Tent campers and small-group travellers who don't mind a 50-200 m walk for a once-in-a-trip view. One oTENTik and four sites are accessible.

Park & access

Reservations via reservation.pc.gc.ca. 2026 season mid-June through October. Parks Canada entry pass required.

Combine it with

Le vieux chemin du Cap Rouge trail (9 km return), the Skyline Trail, and Acadian dining in Chéticamp.

Getting there

Reservations only. Walk-in access; carts provided.
