Tuesday Island Tunes at St. John's Centre for the Arts

Tuesday Island Tunes is a weekly summer music series held at St. John's Centre for the Arts in Arichat, on Isle Madame in Richmond County. The series runs on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 PM at the St. John's Centre for the Arts in Arichat. Admission is by donation at the door, and refreshments are served. The series is a weekly music showcase at St. John's Centre for the Arts featuring local performers. The format suits a broad audience — visitors exploring Isle Madame and the Strait area, summer residents, and locals alike. The intimate setting and accessible admission make it a low-barrier community gathering as much as a performance event. St. John's Centre for the Arts is located in the heart of historic Arichat and was constructed in 1895, designed by renowned architect William Critchlow Harris. The building is noted for its excellent acoustics, beautiful woodwork, and views of the Atlantic Ocean. Originally an Anglican church, it is now owned and operated by the Friends of St. John's Arichat Society, who preserve the building for its heritage value and use it as a multipurpose venue. The building's acoustic qualities make it a natural home for an intimate live music series.

📍 Suggested itinerary

Tuesday is a rich evening in the Strait Area. Head to St. John's Centre for the Arts at 6:30 p.m. for Women on the Water - Stories of Seafaring Women, where local women share compelling accounts of life at sea — part of the beloved Tuesday Island Tunes at St. John's Centre for the Arts series. Later that same evening, stay on for the Tuesday Island Tunes music showcase at 9:30 p.m., which features local performers and operates on a donation basis — a relaxed, community-spirited way to close out the night.

On Wednesday, the free Concerts by the Sea - Louisdale offers 90 minutes of family-friendly local music from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. — a fine excuse to stretch the evening outdoors. Before the concert, settle in for dinner at Miller's Seafood & Chophouse in Port Hawkesbury, where fresh local seafood and steaks are served with a summer patio view over the Strait. Alternatively, Papa's Pub and Eatery, also in Port Hawkesbury, serves craft pizzas and Canadian cuisine with a wide wine list in a warm, unhurried atmosphere.

Friday night is not to be missed. The 94th Annual Milling Frolic and Square Dance at Johnstown Parish Hall is one of Cape Breton's most enduring cultural events — traditional milling demonstrations followed by dancing that runs well into midnight. Visitors looking for a base near the action will find the Dundee Resort & Golf Club in Dundee a natural fit, with lakeside kayaking, paddle boats, and a championship golf course to fill the daylight hours before the festivities begin.

Saturday brings community spirit in two forms: the Bavarian Pork Roast Supper at Loch Lomond Community Hall at 4 p.m. is a warm, neighbourhood gathering around the table, while the Saturday Sessions at the Seal Cove Restaurant & Lounge at 7 p.m. pairs live local music with seafood specials. Those staying in the Saint Peter's area can make good use of the week: Battery Provincial Park Campground offers 53 sites steps from a saltwater beach and hiking trails overlooking St. Peter's Bay, while the Bras d'Or Lakes Inn provides Canada Select 4.5-star comfort with locally sourced dining and live entertainment five nights a week in summer.

Cap off the week Sunday morning at the Johnstown Landing Artisan & Farmers Market on Highway 4, where local growers and makers set up from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. It's a relaxed, unhurried browse through seasonal produce and handcrafted goods — and a fitting send-off to a week steeped in Strait Area character. Grab breakfast or brunch before heading out at Country Kitchen at the Hearthstone Inn in Port Hastings, a Cape Breton home-cooking institution since 1955.
