94th Annual Milling Frolic and Square Dance

Friday, August 21, 2026 · 7:00 a.m.

Watch traditional milling demonstrations and dance at Johnstown Parish Hall on Friday, August 21 from 7 pm to midnight.

A beloved Cape Breton tradition comes alive at Johnstown Parish Hall every Friday evening from 7pm to midnight, featuring lively square dancing and authentic milling frolics led by local musicians and community members. Milling — a centuries-old Gaelic custom of shrinking wool cloth through rhythmic pounding and song — is a living piece of Cape Breton heritage that visitors rarely get to witness firsthand. Come for the music, the movement, and a genuine taste of island culture.
