Strait Area
What to know
The Strait Area is the southwest corner of Cape Breton Island, and for most visitors arriving by land, it's the first thing they see. The Canso Causeway connects the island to mainland Nova Scotia at Port Hawkesbury, an industrial port town that functions more as a gateway than a destination in itself. From here, the region fans out in two directions worth understanding: northwest along the Ceilidh Trail toward the communities of Troy and West Bay, and southeast toward Isle Madame — a French Acadian island reached by causeway from Arichat — and the historic canal town of Saint Peter's.
The geography divides into two water stories. Bras d'Or Lake, the brackish inland sea that defines much of Cape Breton's interior, meets the Atlantic at Saint Peter's via St. Peter's Canal National Historic Site — Canada's oldest tidal lock canal, still operational. On a clear morning you can watch a boat lock through while bald eagles work the shoreline. Bras d'Or Lake Boat Tours and Cape Breton Sailing Charters both operate out of Saint Peter's for anyone who wants to get on the water rather than just look at it.
Who comes here
Drivers doing the full Cabot Trail loop pass through Port Hawkesbury without stopping much, but the Strait Area draws its own quieter crowd. History-minded visitors come for the canal, the Orangedale Railway Station Museum — an 1886 restored station with rolling stock worth an hour of anyone's time — and the Acadian heritage of Isle Madame. The Father John Angus Rankin Cultural Centre in West Bay Road is the place to go for Gaelic archives and weaving demonstrations if that thread of Cape Breton culture interests you. The Celtic Shores Coastal Trail runs 92 km through the region and is well-suited to multi-day cycling or hiking; Celtic Shores Coastal Inn & Suites in Troy sits right on it.
For a slower stay, Isle Madame rewards visitors who linger. From Away Farm (D'Escousse) puts you on 100 acres a kilometer from the ocean, while Caper Cottages in D'Escousse offers oceanfront self-contained units with kayaks. Groundswell Pub & Inn in D'Escousse is where locals eat, with a pub that faces the water. Point Michaud Beach Provincial Park near Fourchu has a 3-km sandy beach with surfable conditions — unusual for this coast.
When to visit
Most businesses operate May through October. Battery Provincial Park Campground beside the St. Peter's Canal and Pepperell Place Inn in Saint Peter's are among the year-round options. The canal and lighthouse area at Saint Peter's are accessible any time; the canal itself typically operates for the navigation season (roughly May to October). Port Hawkesbury stays open year-round given its industrial activity, but many smaller attractions and tours shut after Thanksgiving.
Getting around
A car is essential. Port Hawkesbury is about 45 minutes from the Fleur-de-lis Trail towns and under 30 minutes to Saint Peter's. Isle Madame is reached via a short causeway from Arichat on Route 320. The Ceilidh Trail (Highway 19) runs north from Port Hawkesbury along the Strait before turning inland — this is how you reach Troy and West Bay Road without doubling back through Sydney.
