When to visit

Summer (June–early September) is peak — long warm days, every restaurant and attraction open, festival season in full swing. Autumn (mid-September to mid-October) is widely considered the best time: the Cabot Trail's hardwood forests turn brilliant red, orange, and gold, the crowds thin out, and the weather holds. Winter brings world-class snowshoeing and a quieter, locals-only vibe. Spring is shoulder season — beautiful but cool.

Getting here

By car: the Canso Causeway connects Cape Breton to mainland Nova Scotia — about 4 hours from Halifax. By air: Sydney (YQY) has daily flights from Halifax, Toronto, and seasonal direct from elsewhere. By ferry: from Newfoundland, Marine Atlantic sails into North Sydney year-round.

Five days on the Cabot Trail

  1. Day 1 — Baddeck. Arrive, settle in by the lake, visit the Alexander Graham Bell museum, dinner at the Yellow Cello.
  2. Day 2 — Ingonish & the eastern shore. Drive to Ingonish, hike Middle Head, play 18 at Highland Links, ocean-side dinner.
  3. Day 3 — Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Tackle the Skyline Trail at sunset, stay in Pleasant Bay, watch for whales.
  4. Day 4 — Chéticamp & Acadian coast. Drive over French Mountain, lobster lunch in Chéticamp, hooked-rug museum, ceilidh at Doryman.
  5. Day 5 — Inverness & Mabou. Beach walk, tee it up at Cabot Links or Cabot Cliffs, dinner at the Red Shoe Pub.

Don't miss

  • A traditional ceilidh (Gaelic for "kitchen party") — fiddle, step-dancing, and tea biscuits.
  • The Fortress of Louisbourg — the largest historical reconstruction in North America.
  • Whale-watching from Pleasant Bay or Bay St. Lawrence (June–October).
  • Fresh lobster rolls — Baddeck Lobster Suppers, the Clucking Hen, the Rusty Anchor.
