Franey Trail
Franey is a thigh-burning loop that climbs 366 vertical metres up the eastern flank of the highlands plateau. The ascent winds through hardwood forest before emerging onto a wind-scoured granite summit looking out over Ingonish, Middle Head, and the dramatic gorge of the Clyburn Brook. The descent follows an old fire road that is gentler on the knees but longer. Most hikers complete the loop in three to four hours. Carry plenty of water—there are no sources on the climb—and start early on hot days. The trailhead is reached by a short gravel access road off the Cabot Trail near Ingonish.

- Hardwood forest on the climb that turns spectacular in late September.
- A wind-scoured granite summit with stunted spruce and exposed bedrock.
- Bald eagles often at eye level from the lookout.
- The full sweep of the Cape Smokey ridge to the south.
