Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site

Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site

Where the inventor lived, worked, and is buried — overlooking Bras d'Or Lake.

Bell summered (and ultimately retired) at his Beinn Bhreagh estate above Baddeck. The museum holds the world's most complete Bell collection — early telephones, hydrofoil prototypes, the HD-4 speedboat, and his kite-flying experiments.

Highlights

  • The world's most complete Bell collection — early telephone prototypes, original patents, drawings, and personal effects.
  • The HD-4 hydrofoil, which set a marine speed record on Baddeck Bay in 1919.
  • A full-size replica of the Silver Dart, the first powered aircraft to fly in the British Empire (Baddeck Bay, 1909).
  • A whole gallery devoted to Bell's tetrahedral kite experiments and the cell-built giant kites.
  • Exhibits on Bell's lifelong work with the deaf community, including his connection to Helen Keller and his marriage to Mabel Hubbard.
  • A view across the bay to Beinn Bhreagh, the Bell family estate still owned by descendants.

Plan your visit

  • Allow at least two hours; three for curious kids who linger at the hands-on stations.
  • The hands-on workshop is a highlight — kids can build a small tetrahedral kite to fly outside.
  • Parks Canada admission applies; included in the discovery pass.
  • Open daily late spring through fall, with reduced hours in shoulder season.
  • Fully wheelchair-accessible with elevators between levels.
  • For lunch, walk down into Baddeck village rather than eating at the cafeteria.

Combine it with

  • A boat tour of Baddeck Bay; several outfits run trips that pass close to Beinn Bhreagh.
  • Uisge Ban Falls Trail, 20 minutes inland, for a forest-and-waterfall outing.
  • The Cabot Trail loop starting from Baddeck — most travellers head north from here.
