📍 Suggested itinerary

Start the week with a walk out to Enragée Point Lighthouse, the octagonal sentinel perched on Chéticamp Island at the entrance to Chéticamp harbour. September light falls low and golden across the water at this hour, and the headlands beyond the harbour mouth offer a quiet payoff for the short trip out. Pack a lunch from L'abri Café, Restaurant and Bar before you go — the homemade baked goods and specialty coffee make excellent trail companions.

Wednesday evening brings Free Live Music w/ River's Bend at 7:00 p.m., where the band works through country, bluegrass, and easy listening material. It's an unhurried, no-cover night — arrive early and settle in with something from the bar. Before the show, Le Gabriel Restaurant & Lounge on the Cabot Trail serves fresh seafood and Acadian cuisine, including homemade desserts that are worth saving room for.

Thursday's Talent Night at the Doryman Pub & Grill runs from 8:00 to 10:30 p.m. and showcases local musicians and singers — a rotating cast that gives every visit a different character. For dinner beforehand, Harbour Restaurant & Bar in Petit Étang is a family-run spot overlooking the Cabot Trail, where the fresh seafood and pasta come with genuine Acadian hospitality.

Friday is the week's centrepiece. Claude Bourgeois and Chester Delaney have been playing Acadian and traditional music together at the Doryman since 2011, and Free Live Music: Claude Bourgeois & Chester Delaney at 7:00 p.m. draws a loyal crowd for good reason. Chester's fiddle work and the duo's deep knowledge of traditional repertoire make this a genuinely rare evening. Fuel up beforehand — Wabo's Pizza, Sub & Donair in Chéticamp offers easy dine-in or takeout on the Cabot Trail for a low-key pre-show meal.

Saturday is the day to hike Skyline Trail, where a headland cliff delivers panoramic views of the Cabot Trail coastline and, in September, a real chance of spotting whales offshore. After the hike, head north along the trail to Rusty Anchor Restaurant in Pleasant Bay for lobster rolls and fish and chips with the ocean in the window. On Sunday, cap the week with Suppertime Music: Risin' Tide [Acoustic] at 6:00 p.m. — an acoustic set of classic rock, country, and East Coast favourites that sends visitors back down the trail with the right kind of noise in their heads.

🥾 Worth the drive

Enragée Point Lighthouse

Lighthouse

Enragée Point Lighthouse

Enragée Point Lighthouse stands on the western tip of Cheticamp Island, an octagonal wooden tower painted bright white. A gravel road and short walk lead out to the point, with sweeping views back to the Cheticamp village waterfront and west to the open Gulf. Wind here is often fierce, as the name (French for "enraged") suggests.

What to see

  • A handsome octagonal wooden lighthouse, painted bright white, in a wide-open clifftop setting.
  • Long views east back to the Cheticamp church and waterfront, framed by the highlands rising behind.
  • Open Gulf horizon to the west — Magdalen Islands visible on the clearest days.
  • Pilot whales and fin whales offshore in summer; bald eagles overhead.
  • The Cheticamp Island gypsum-cliff coastline running south from the light.

Tips

  • Bring a serious wind layer — the name is not a joke.
  • Best light is morning for the lighthouse against the headland.
  • Stay back from the cliff edges; the rock is undermined in places.
  • The access road is gravel and bumpy but passable in any car.
  • A great sunset spot when the wind allows you to stand still.

Park & access

  • Reached by Cheticamp Island Road off the Cabot Trail just south of Cheticamp village.
  • The final approach is a short walk from the parking area.
  • Free; year-round access.
  • No facilities on site.

Combine it with

  • The Acadian Trail above Cheticamp for a longer afternoon hike.
  • Les Trois Pignons or the Cheticamp hooked-rug museum for an Acadian cultural stop.
  • A seafood meal on the Cheticamp waterfront — chowder and crab cakes are standard.

Skyline Trail

attraction

Skyline Trail

A dramatic headland cliff overlooks the rugged coast from the end of this level trail. You can enjoy an eagle’s view of the Cabot Trail as it winds its way down the mountain and vehicles look like toys. Watch for whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence from the viewing decks. Moose, bald eagles, bears and numerous boreal birds live in this habitat. Give moose a wide berth. You are required to stay on the boardwalk. This protects the fragile headland plants that are easily damaged by trampling and you, the visitor, from the dangers of steep cliffs and high winds. Fines may be issued for entering restricted areas. For the safety of visitors and wildlife, dogs are not permitted here. Wildlife like moose and bear become particularly agitated in the presence of dogs. Check in at the Parks Canada visitor centres in Chéticamp (16 Visitor Centre Rd., situated on the west side of the park) or in Ingonish (37637 Cabot Trail, on the east side of the park) to obtain passes, information on visitor safety and any other information you may need, including a trail location map. For your comfort and safety: Stay on boardwalks to protect fragile vegetation. Dogs are not permitted on the Skyline Trail as they disturb wildlife, especially moose and bear. Do not approach, disturb or feed wild animals. Take along appropriate clothing – rapid weather changes often occur on the plateau or along the coast. Carry water with you, especially for longer trails, climbs or open barrens. Bring insect repellent as black flies and mosquitoes are common all summer. Stay on designated trails and boardwalks to protect fragile vegetation. Do not throw food or scraps along the trails or roads. Read "Keep it Wild, Keep it Safe" brochure, available at park visitor centres and on the Parks Canada website. Recreational drone use is prohibited within the national park for the safety of wildlife and other visitors. Skyline Trail parking reservations will be required during the 2026 peak season. A new parking reservation system will be in place from June 26 to October 25, 2026. To ensure a safe and enjoyable visit, visitors must plan ahead and secure a parking reservation in advance. Once all parking reservations are booked, there is no access to the trail during that time. Visitors are strongly encouraged to book their parking reservation online or by phone before arriving to guarantee entry and avoid disappointment.
