Inverness Beach

Long sandy Gulf beach with warm water, dunes, and a wooden boardwalk into town.

Inverness Beach stretches several kilometres along the Northumberland Strait, backed by grass-stabilised dunes and connected to the village by a long wooden boardwalk. Water temperatures climb above 20 degrees in midsummer, making it one of the warmest swimming beaches in Atlantic Canada. Lifeguards are on duty in July and August. The Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf courses sit immediately south.

What it's like

  • Wide, fine-grained sand with a gentle slope into the Gulf — easy entry for kids and not-quite-swimmers.
  • One of the warmest saltwater beaches north of New Jersey thanks to the shallow Northumberland Strait.
  • Sheltered enough that swells are usually small; on a south wind it can flatten right out.
  • The dunes behind the boardwalk are fragile — stay on the marked paths to protect the marram grass holding them together.

Facilities

  • Public washrooms and outdoor showers at the main boardwalk entrance.
  • Lifeguard supervision in peak summer; flags posted daily.
  • Picnic tables along the boardwalk, plus food trucks and a couple of canteens in season.
  • A short walk into Inverness village for a proper meal, ice cream, or a pint.

Best at

  • Late afternoon through sunset, when the light hits the dunes and the Gulf turns gold.
  • Low tide for tide-pool walking on the rocky stretch toward the harbour.
  • August, when the water is at its warmest and the rugosa rose along the boardwalk is in bloom.

Park & access

  • Free parking at the boardwalk lot off Lower Railway Street; arrives full on hot weekends.
  • Overflow parking near the harbour and along the village streets.
  • Boardwalk is wheelchair-accessible all the way to a viewing platform; sand access requires beach mats not always available.

Combine it with

  • A round (or even a beer at the Panorama deck) at Cabot Links right next door.
  • Live music and a pint at the Red Shoe Pub in Mabou, 25 minutes south.
  • Mabou Beach or Port Hood Beach for a quieter alternative on the same shore.
