Things to do in Eskasoni, Cape Breton
Eskasoni First Nation sits on the south shore of East Bay, where the water opens into the Bras d'Or Lake — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is the largest Mi'kmaw community in Nova Scotia and, by most accounts, the largest Mi'kmaw-speaking community in the world. Walking through the community, you'll hear Mi'kmaw in conversation, in stores, between neighbours — not as a performance, but as the living language of daily life.
The main draw for visitors is Eskasoni Cultural Journeys, which runs guided tours on Goat Island where local basket weavers, drummers, and storytellers share their traditions in traditional wigwams. It's one of the more genuine cultural experiences available anywhere in Atlantic Canada. The Eskasoni Mawio'mi (Powwow) draws visitors each summer to the Eskasoni Powwow Grounds and is worth timing your trip around if you can.
The shoreline here is quieter than the better-known stretches of the Bras d'Or, and that's part of the appeal. Come in summer for the powwow or a cultural tour; the drive from Sydney takes under an hour.

About Eskasoni
What is Eskasoni known for?
Eskasoni is the largest Mi'kmaw community in Nova Scotia and is recognized as the largest Mi'kmaw-speaking community in the world. It's known for **Eskasoni Cultural Journeys** on Goat Island, where visitors meet local artisans, drummers, and storytellers, and for the annual Eskasoni Mawio'mi (Powwow), a significant community gathering open to visitors.
How many days do you need in Eskasoni?
A half-day is enough for the Goat Island cultural tour through Eskasoni Cultural Journeys. If you're timing a visit around the Mawio'mi, plan to stay at least one full day; most visitors base themselves in Baddeck or near Sydney and make Eskasoni a focused stop.
What's the best time to visit Eskasoni?
Summer is the best time — Eskasoni Cultural Journeys operates its guided tours seasonally, and the Eskasoni Mawio'mi (Powwow) takes place in summer at the Eskasoni Powwow Grounds. Check current dates for both before you plan, as schedules shift year to year.
Where should you stay in Eskasoni?
Eskasoni itself doesn't have commercial accommodations; most visitors stay in Baddeck, about 45 minutes west, where options include the Baddeck Cabot Trail Campground or Adventures East Campground & Cottages along the Trans-Canada. Sydney, roughly 50 minutes away, has the widest range of hotels.
How do you get to Eskasoni?
Eskasoni is about a 50-minute drive from the Sydney/J.A. Douglas McCurdy Airport (YQY), which has direct seasonal connections from several Canadian cities. From Halifax, the drive is roughly 4 hours and 40 minutes. A car is essential — there's no public transit serving the community.
