Bras d'Or Watch 2026

Saturday, August 1, 2026 · 10:00 a.m.

Bras d'Or Watch is a community-facing citizen science initiative tied to the Bras d'Or Lake UNESCO Biosphere Region, one of Cape Breton Island's most ecologically significant waterways. The event introduces residents and visitors to the unique Bras d'Or ecosystem. It takes place in summer and, in its Richmond County iteration, is anchored along the southern shores of the lake — the part of the estuary that falls within Richmond County, which includes communities such as St. Peter's. Scientists and local community members welcome citizen scientists at several sites around the estuary to learn more about the natural environment of the nearshore and develop a "report card" on ecosystem health at one point in time across several sites around the estuary. This coordinated, single-day approach means participants across multiple locations are effectively contributing to a snapshot of lake health simultaneously, making each individual's observations part of a larger, island-wide data picture. The Bras d'Or Watch field day is described as a celebration of the community's place in the unique Bras d'Or Lake Biosphere.
