Blessing of the Fleet & Boat Parade — event in Strait Area, Cape Breton

Blessing of the Fleet & Boat Parade

Saturday, July 25, 2026 · 10:45 a.m.

The Blessing of the Fleet and Boat Parade is a community waterfront event organized by Richmond County, held in mid-summer along the shores of Isle Madame — the island community off the southeastern tip of Cape Breton that has been home to active fishing families for centuries. Arichat, the primary settlement on Isle Madame, is part of the Municipality of the County of Richmond. The area has a deep and protected natural harbour that made it an important fishing and shipbuilding centre historically. The Blessing of the Fleet is a longstanding ritual in Cape Breton's fishing communities. The ceremony is a tradition in many fishing communities along the island's coastline, typically bringing together fishers, their families, and community members at the waterfront to mark the season. Originating in grassroots community organizing, these events have traditionally included a church service and a parade of community groups from a local parish to the government wharf.
