Acadian Meatpie & Seafood Chowder Community Supper
The Acadian Meatpie & Seafood Chowder Community Supper is a community fundraiser and cultural gathering held in Richmond County, on the southeastern shore of Cape Breton Island. The event centers on two of the most enduring dishes of the local Acadian table, bringing together residents and visitors around food that reflects generations of coastal living. Acadian meat pie is a dense dish of seasoned shredded meat baked in rich pastry. Acadians draw a distinction between the tourtière of Québec and their own meat pies: where tourtière leans on a pork-beef mixture with spices like clove and cinnamon, authentic Acadian pies feature pork seasoned with summer savory, the signature herb of Acadian cooking. Alongside it, the Acadian seafood chowder is a delicately seasoned broth built around the freshest catches of the ocean, combined with hearty potato chunks. Together, these two dishes form the heart of the evening's menu and serve as an edible marker of the region's French-Acadian heritage.
