Glace Bay Heritage Museum
The Glace Bay Heritage Museum is a vibrant heritage museum in the restored Old Town Hall (c 1903). Located along the Marconi Trail on Cape Breton Island, exhibits include Glace Bay Harbour (c 1940) during the heyday of the swordfish industry, a coal mining exhibit with a pit pony and rotating displays on day-to-day life in the region. The second floor includes the council chamber and mayor’s office. It also houses an extensive Marconi exhibit, displays on the area’s labour history as well as a sports and entertainment museum. Our museum also contains a gift shop where visitors can purchase a variety of jewelry, toys, pottery and Maritime books. The shop functions as a tourism information centre as well and contains information on other notable attractions in the area. Our second-hand bookstore is very popular – every book $2. The Coal Miners’ Memorial to deceased miners is located on museum grounds, and the new Marconi Monument celebrating the inventor’s accomplishments in Cape Breton is situated on the grounds of the old Town Hall.
