Amoeba Sailing Tours
Schooner sailing on the Bras d'Or Lake out of Baddeck's government wharf. The Amoeba is a classic two-masted schooner that's been ferrying visitors across these inland waters for decades, with bald-eagle sightings on most trips and views of Alexander Graham Bell's Beinn Bhreagh estate from the water.
What to expect
- A roughly 90-minute sail with no engine drone once the sails are up
- Bench seating along the rails; bring a layer, the breeze is real
- Small-boat feel with a chatty captain and crew narrating as you go
- Calm, sheltered water — a good option if you're not a strong sea sailor
Don't miss
- The pass under Kidston Island lighthouse and the eagle nests on the cliffs
- Sunset sailings when the Bras d'Or turns gold and the Highlands silhouette
- Asking the crew to point out Beinn Bhreagh, Bell's family home
Good to know
- Operates roughly June through mid-October, weather dependent
- Cash and card accepted; reservations strongly recommended in July and August
- Limited washroom on board — go before you board
- Departs from the Baddeck Government Wharf, easy walking from downtown
Pair it with
- The Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, a 10-minute walk from the wharf
- Lunch or coffee at Highwheeler Café before heading out
- A drive up to Uisge Ban Falls if the weather closes in
